What to Know About Replacement Windows for Your Home
A home is a long-term investment and one of the most important features of a home are the windows. From both a design and energy efficiency standpoint, replacing old or damaged windows can add significantly to the value of a home. One of the key questions homeowners have is when they shouldreplace their old windows. Since window replacement costs can be significant, it is important to know the right time to make the change.
Window condensation is a sign that a home has old and inefficient windows. Water, frost or ice on windows means that glass in the current window is losing heat to the outside, leading to the accumulation of moisture. Not only can this moisture damage the window itself, but significant moisture can trip down into the lower wall, leading to rot, mildew and mold. Replacement windows are designed with double panes and high-tech glazing that reduces heat transfer and stop condensation.
Windows that are difficult to open and close or have rattling glass are likely due for replacement. Not only are these issues annoying, they can be a safety concern. Forcing open a stuck window can cause more damage to the window frame or break the glass itself. Rattling can mean the glazing on the window is failing, leading to drafts and in extreme cases, the panes themselves falling out of the window. While re-glazing panes is an option, this is generally only a short term fix.
Drafts and cold air radiating from windows is another sure sign that replacement time is coming up. Drafts usually occur when the window frame and sash begin to crack or show signs of wear. New replacement windows will have tighter fitting components and special materials designed to eliminate drafts. When new windows are replaced, the surrounding window frame insulation will also be replaced, eliminating drafts between the frame and interior and exterior house trim. You’ll be amazed at the difference once you replace your windows.
